Thank you for reminding us of this atrocity, one in the long list of horrors for which Vladimir Putin is responsible. And this is the man the American president looks up to, like a puppy to his master.

This is the real lesson people need to learn.

The details you describe, Mr. Khodorkovsky, are the very same etched in my mind from the time I learned of the event. I was aware of his bullied boy victim pathology but my understanding was solidified when coupled with the apartment bombings.

Noteworthy that Drumpf has a similar profile.

It's a wonder that we are unable to prevent these profiles from attaining power once their attributes are recognized.

every intelligence agency must have flagged this as the moment when they knew Putin was a killer, and their intelligent perspective on history must have concluded that Putin would not stop.

At this moment and from this moment on we knew we were dealing with a monster.

Can you shed some light on how the elite processed this moment? Did Bush still think that this was a man we could do business with? Did Merkel’s circle react?

So how does a second rate mediocre stooge achieve so much power? Where were the checks and balances? (Trump is trying to become an autocrat too but the system is stymieing him). Russia was democratic in Yeltsin’s time, courts were (somewhat) independent; how did it all slip away?

Couldn't agree more. But anyone likely to come after Putin will have sociopathic tendencies as well. The problem is with the entire Russian political class and the FSB.

The inner core of the sociopath's circle (Rotenbergs, Kovalchuk, Patrushev) cannot abandon the tyrant. Not only for the own sakes, but for their children and grandchildren who are woven into the rotten system. Who will pay for Cristal champagne and bad behavior at the Folie Douce in Val d'Isere this winter? No, to maintain this corrupt system will require a sudden change at the top.

Russian intelligence just detonated military-grade explosives at a German airport. So why is Washington rolling out the red carpet for Putin instead of rallying NATO?

Because it’s the pot calling the kettle black.

Donald Trump cannot condemn Russian gray-zone terror in Europe when he is busy executing militarized kidnappings and resource grabs in Venezuela. When you strip away the patriotic wrapping paper, a darker reality emerges: Washington and Moscow are running the exact same authoritarian playbook.

I just published a forensic, line-by-line accounting of how strongman hubris is driving the West into a generational meatgrinder.

The bombing of Grozny had shown what he was long before Beslan. His using Beslan to pursue his own goals, on the other hand is sadly ordinary. W Bush's regime's invasion of Irak in "response" to 9/11 is in another league, bath in shamelessness and number children that died as a consequence.

I had completely forgotten about this heinous response to the school seizure, and the unmitigated, terrible disaster that ensued. It should not be forgotten, and especially not as long as Putin is alive.

Precisely. Sociopathic leadership in many countries. The USA too.

In plain sight but many do not see.

Many don’t study history and don’t know about the atrocities.

As if it wasn't obvious that a KGB officer is a psychopath.
