Sooner rather than later the FSB will dump Putin, in order to keep control. My money is on young Andrei Patruschev (son of the 74-year-old Nicholai) and his cronies. Think about it, the oligarchs, Siloviki, can then ‘normalise’ relations with the west, return to their villas on Lake Como and their neglected Kensington apartments. Keep stealing from the Russian state with impunity. What’s not to like?

Not guaranteed though. The KGB / Beria kept Stalin in power, but were sidelined by Khrushchev and the army fairly quickly after his death.

Has the KGB at last been discredited as a kingmaker, by all this, does anyone think? They appear to have become, only, a malevolent force, supporting these “policies” of one of their own… but not a policy-maker…

I am trying to imagine our bright new ICE bunch, at our “table”, masked & armed & glowering across at our Army & Political Parties & other power-players who think they themselvfes still have some say… that would be ICE-with-dictator, just like KGB-with-same in Russia, then… Gestapo-with-dictator… Prætorian Guard-with-dictator… nightmares…

But do you suppose the parallel would hold, today, are we / they that far gone?
